Sparkly Vampires and Racoons – It’s a Bug’s Life – 5/11/19

‘It’s a Bug’s life’, the weekly post when I tell you what films we’ve watched both on our film Sundays and other parts of the week (I will talk about TV shows elsewhere). Please if you haven’t read the introduction page to this series go take a look that’s where you’ll learn the history of our sorely missed ‘Bug’.

There are no spoilers for the films listed

You left me at the end of last week in the middle of the Twilight films, if you want to read my thoughts on the first 3 pop over and have a look. On Tuesday and Wednesday we finished off the films with Breaking Dawn 1 and 2. On this viewing it definitely reinforced my opinion that these are the two best films of the 5. If you’re really into these films the Blu-ray’s are chock a block with good quality extras, though strangely no deleted scenes.

Halloween dawned and after much discussion about what film we should pick we ended up watching ‘The Cabin in the Woods’, it’s been a few years since I last watched this film. I do love the way it plays with Horror tropes and plays homage to classic films. Mrs BAFTD did point out one thing though, as much as we enjoy the film it is one of those films that you can never recreate the impact of the first viewing. If you’ve never seen it I would suggest don’t read anything about it just see it.

On Saturday we decided to do two films I revisited a film I’ve not seen in over 20 years ‘Big Trouble in Little China’. I know there has been a recent knew all singing and dancing Arrow release, we were watching the 2004 special Edition DVD. I will say the the film transfer was great. I really enjoyed the film I can watch Kurt Russell in anything. I do know that some people absolutely rave about this film. My opinion is it’s an good and enjoyable film but it has never really blown me away. There is an extra disc of extras on this version which I will dip into at some point.

Saturday night we finished off with one of our ‘Go to’ films. Mrs BAFTD wasn’t feeling to good so we went for ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’. We have watched this film too many times to count and in my opinion the Guardians films really are the best in the MCU due to their individuality and great characterisation.

We Knew that this week our film Sunday wasn’t going to be much of a Film day as we had a lot of things to do in the day. In the evening though we decided to settle down to Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 (it had to be done).

So we had a bit of an unintended Kurt Russell weekend. Our copy of GOTG Vol 2 is one of the big sleeve editions. It is a shame they no longer do these as I always had a soft spot for them. We did have some time left at the end of the evening so we decided to dip into the first episode of the new BBC/HBO adaptation of His Dark Materials. If you want to hear my initial thoughts on that a post will be coming shortly.
