The Almighty Johnsons – The Donkey Recommends

Media that may have flown under your radar but is well worth checking out. The Donkey Recommends I have attempted to keep program spoilers to a minimum, but discussing the quality of this show without revealing anything is almost impossible, any spoilers that appear will be minor. If I feel what I am about to reveal is more major it will be sign-posted within the text.

Second Times a Dream, well sometimes – Intermission – March 2020

Intermission Header Image

‘As the usher brings forth the Ice cream and snacks, we wait for the main feature to resume’ Second Times a Dream, well sometimes My Father in Law only watches films once, he’s not into films and media the same way both myself and my wife are, but just the once? I don’t expect anyone to get obsessive about certain things that I do, but just the once? There are so many things that my opinion has changed on subsequent viewings. Sometimes good sometimes bad, it can be the passage…

Why you should watch Star Trek TMP Director’s Edition

*As you would expect, there are some spoilers for the film in this article* I get fed up with people playing around with films, there is an argument to be had that Directors cuts and other cuts are a scourge on film history and just a case of revisionism. That conversation is one I will have in another article but every now and then a ‘Directors version’ crops up that isn’t just a case of vanity or wishing to change the past. This cut is not put together out of…

War of the Worlds (2019) – Conclusion

**As with my first look there will be spoilers, if you’ve not watched it and plan to come back afterwards.** There has been a longer period of time between this and my original thoughts on the first episode. This has been due in someways to the Christmas holidays but also because I actually found this hard to write, the main reason was I struggled to have enough interest in the program. I have so much respect for anyone who gets a TV show or film made, the amount of work…

Intermission Header Image

‘As the usher brings forth the Ice cream and snacks, we wait for the main feature to resume’ You will find only what you bring in At 1 minute past midnight on the 19th December 2019 I sat in our local Cinema and watched the Lucasfilm logo as it appeared on the screen. After 42 years I finally watched the final instalment of what is now known as the Skywalker Saga. This journey had started for me at the age of 9 one sunny afternoon with my Dad. It was…

René Auberjonois (1940-2019)

René Auberjonois who to me and many Star Trek fans will always be Odo sadly died on December 8th at his Home in Los Angeles. In 1970 he appeared in Robert Altman’s M*A*S*H playing father Mulcahy along side Donald Sutherland and Elliot Gould. He also played an ornithologist in Robert Altmans Brewster McCloud the same year. Throughout the 1970 he continued doing numerous guest slots on Television shows and appeared in 1976’s…

Star Trek: The Motion Picture (40th Anniversary)

40th Anniversary of Star Trek Who would have guessed it STTMP is 40 years old, on the 7th December 1979 it had it’s cinematic release in the United States. It had not been an easy process to get it to the big screen but it was worth it for all it brought to Roddenberry’s universe, and what it managed to set up to follow it. If it wasn’t for STTMP we wouldn’t have had the films that followed, The Next Generation, DS9, Voyager and much more. The Journey to Star…

Supporting Features – Intermission – Dec 2019

Intermission Header Image

‘As the usher brings forth the Ice cream and snacks, we wait for the main feature to resume’ Supporting Features This is the bit where I show my age. When I was a boy and I used to go to the ‘Pictures’ there were several things that happened in that emporium of the imagination that do not anymore. Along with intermissions, ushers selling ice-cream and those weird kia-ora juice box/container thingies, there was normally a supporting feature. This would normally be a short film shown before the main feature, most…

Is His Dark Materials Unfilmable? – Episode 1

In fantasy world building is important to the believability of the world you are reading or watching, it is what the whole story hangs on. Tolkien managed it perfectly in The Lord of the Rings as did Philip Pullman in His Dark Materials books. To adapt these books to other mediums care needs to be taken to ensure the world building is there, along with the spirit of the story.
